Cooper&Smith celebrate the launch of their handcrafted propagation stations.

After COVID-19 restrictions on travel and gatherings left cruise ship entertainer Liam Cooper and wedding makeup artist Amy Cooper out of work, they swapped their instruments and brushes for power tools. 

This month the husband and wife duo celebrate the re-launch of their online store Cooper&Smith (cooperandsmith.com.au) fully stocked with their handcrafted collection of propagation stations – glass jars in timber frames where plant cuttings can be grown in water.

Prior to setting up their own workshop in their parents’ garage the business sold over $120,000 in Chinese-manufactured propagation stations through the process of dropshipping, which became impossible due to cancelled flights stalling the movement of freight and blowing out delivery times.

“We wanted to take this opportunity to start crafting these propagation stations ourselves to improve the product quality, packaging, shipping times and overall customer experience”, says Liam. 

Cooper&Smith had always been a part-time project for the couple, whose backgrounds in digital marketing and customer service drove business’ early success. Their knowledge of woodworking has grown quickly from YouTube videos, talking to the team at Bunnings and a little trial and error.

“COVID-19 hit both our industries pretty hard. Liam and I both love plants, so being able to take this opportunity and make our own propagation stations is the best thing to come out of it all”, says Amy.

You might recognise Amy and Liam from their viral marriage proposal video that clocked up 11 million views after going viral in 2015. Liam performs his live show titled Kings of the Keys and offers marketing consulting as Cooper Digital, while Amy is a wedding makeup artist based in Wollongong.
