World Youth Day Kraków           KAROL: A Man who became Pope

Director: Giacomo Battiato
Year of production: 2005
Duration: 186 min

Synopsis:
Based on the book “Stories of Karol: The Unknown Life of John Paul II” the movie tells the story of Karol Wojtyła. It begins in 1939 at the Wawel Castle in Kraków at the time when German troops invade Poland. Under the Nazi occupation Karol, a young student at the Jagiellonian University, witnesses the arrest of the faculty of this university and the violation of human rights. He comes to the conclusion that he should refrain from armed struggle and rather protect the spiritual heritage of the Polish nation. The film ends with the conclave in 1978, which elected a new successor of St. Peter. Soundtrack by multi-award winner Ennio Morricone.
