World Press Photo Contest winners on show at NSW State Library
See the world’s best photojournalism from 2017 when the annual World Press Photo exhibition opens at the State Library of NSW, from Saturday 26 May 2018.
The highly anticipated exhibition will feature over 150 powerful and evocative images and photo stories, selected from 73,044 entries by 4,548 photographers from 125 different countries.
Australian photographers Patrick Brown (based in Thailand) and Adam Ferguson (based in New York) are among this year’s winners.
The coveted Photo of the Year (see attached) was awarded to Ronaldo Schemidt’s arresting picture of José Víctor Salazar Balza (28) on fire amid violent clashes with riot police during a protest against President Nicolás Maduro, in Caracas, Venezuela. The image was captured on 3 May 2017 while protesters (many wearing hoods, masks or gas masks) lit fires and hurled stones. Salazar survived the incident with first- and second-degree burns.
