Multicultural Advisory Committee requires new members

Fairfield City Council is calling for applications for the next Multicultural Advisory Committee (MAC) before Sunday 21 January 2018.

The Committee comprises up to 14 members who are selected on the basis of experience working with the local multicultural community.

Mayor of Fairfield City Frank Carbone said the MAC played a vital role in supporting Council’s initiatives for the highly multicultural Fairfield City community.

“Fairfield City is one of the most multicultural cities in Australia; more than half the residents were born overseas and over 70 per cent speak a language other than English at home,” Mayor Carbone said.

“With our City’s significant cultural diversity in mind, the MAC plays an important role in providing informed strategic advice and recommendations to Council on issues affecting multicultural community groups, as well as new migrants and refugees.

“Being a MAC member provides people with an opportunity to have their say about issues that affect their own cultural communities, while also connecting people with other cultural groups and leaders, which helps promote social cohesion.”

As a member of the Multicultural Advisory Committee, volunteers will be able to put their experience and local connections to use by contributing to Council services and policies and providing advice to other local information providers to make them more effective and accessible to Fairfield City’s multicultural community.

“MAC has provided opportunities for groups within Fairfield City to better understand each other and build on celebrating diversity. I strongly encourage new representatives to join and participate in the democracy that Council encourages,” Mayor Carbone said.

The next term for MAC will commence in February 2018. Membership is open to all community members in Fairfield City from all backgrounds.
