Seniors encouraged to dive into digital age

Seniors encouraged to dive into digital age

Using smart phones, internet banking and search engines will all become a breeze for NSW seniors taking part in the 2018 Tech Savvy Seniors Roadshow, with new lessons on offer to encourage more seniors than ever to dive into the digital age.

Minister for Ageing Tanya Davies and Member for Heathcote Lee Evans today launched the digital literacy Roadshow at Sutherland Library, ahead of stops in six regional centres over the next two weeks.

“The Roadshow is the perfect way to connect even more seniors to the NSW Government’s highly successful Tech Savvy Seniors program,” Mrs Davies said.

“We are constantly improving and adding more learning modules to ensure lessons relate to seniors. The newest addition will show seniors how to get the most out of the NSW Seniors Card mobile app and brand new website.”

Delivered in partnership with Telstra, the Tech Savvy Seniors program provides free or low cost training through a network of community colleges and libraries to help seniors learn to use computers, tablets and smartphones.

Mr Evans said more than 65,000 older people across NSW have enrolled in training places since the Tech Savvy Seniors program began in 2012 including hundreds in Heathcote.

“It’s wonderful to see seniors in my community being empowered by new skills such as how to use social media, share photos with family and friends, bank and seek information online, and now, how to make the most of local Seniors Card deals,” Mr Evans said.

Telstra Area General Manager Tricia Wilson said the program aims to help people 60 years or older, to develop their skills and build confidence in the increasingly digital world.

“We want everyone to thrive in the digital world, regardless of age, background, ability or where they live. These sessions are about helping people learn how to unlock the benefits that come with being online, and also focuses on doing so in a safe way,” said Ms Wilson.

The Roadshow will travel to Nowra, Bega, Broken Hill, Orange, Mudgee and Tamworth. For information on dates and locations go to www.seniorscard.nsw.gov.au. To find ready-to-use Tech Savvy Seniors resources visit www.telstra.com.au/tech-savvy-seniors.
